Online Safety for Children
Staying Safe Online
At Blackfordby St Margaret’s, we want everyone to feel safe, happy and confident when using computers, tablets, phones or the internet.
The internet is a brilliant place to learn new things, play games and talk to friends — but it’s important to know how to stay safe.
Here are some easy rules to help keep you safe online.
Be Kind Online
Always treat people online the same way you treat people in school.
- Be friendly
- Be polite
- Never send unkind messages
- Think before you type
If someone is unkind online, tell an adult straight away.
Keep Your Personal Information Private
Never share:
- Your full name
- Your address
- Your school
- Your passwords
- Your phone number
- Photos without permission
If someone online asks for this information, STOP and TELL an adult.
Ask Before You Click
Talk to your grown‑ups before you:
- Download apps
- Join new games
- Click on pop‑ups
- Open messages from people you don’t know
If you’re not sure — ask first.
Use Strong Passwords
A strong password is:
- Secret
- Hard to guess
- Only shared with your grown‑ups
Never tell a friend your password.
Only Talk to People You Know
Only chat with people you know in real life.
If someone you don’t know tries to talk to you online:
STOP → BLOCK → TELL
You won’t be in trouble for telling an adult.
Be Careful With Photos and Videos
Before you post or share something, ask yourself:
- Is this kind?
- Is this safe?
- Would I be happy for anyone to see this?
If you’re unsure — don’t post it.
If Something Upsets You
If something online:
- Scares you
- Upsets you
- Confuses you
- Doesn’t feel right
Tell a trusted adult straight away.
You can talk to:
- Your teacher
- A teaching assistant
- Miss Benson (Designated Safeguarding Lead)
- Mrs Horne (Deputy DSL)
- Mrs Ridley (Deputy DSL)
- A parent or carer
We are always here to help you.
